West Nile fever maps

During the 2011 West Nile fever transmission season, 21 June - 25 November, ECDC has been publishing on its website weekly updates on the spatial distribution of West Nile fever cases in the European Union and neighbouring countries. Cases reported in the EU were confirmed cases according to the EU case definition and all reported cases outside the EU.

The weekly report provided timely information about the number of reported cases of West Niles virus (WNV) infection in humans. The information was provided by EU Member States and bordering countries and was  updated on a weekly basis, every Friday. The data refers to autochthonous human cases of WNV infection only.

ECDC published its last weekly update of the WN fever maps on Friday, 25 November, and closed its seasonal monitoring of West Nile virus transmission for 2011. Read a summary of West Nile virus transmission season in Europe

 SITUATION UPDATE

Since 21 June, ECDC has published on its website weekly updates on spatial distribution of West Nile fever cases in the European Union and neighbouring countries. In the EU, the last cases occurred in October, in Hungary, Italy (week 40) and Greece (week 42). In the neighbouring countries, the last cases occurred in November, in the Russian Federation and Israel. Thus, the transmission season is over. However, ECDC is still collecting infomation about late reported cases to improve the completeness of the records (see below).

As of 13 January 2012, 96 confirmed human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU; 69 cases in Greece, 3 in Hungary, 14 in Italy and 10 in Romania. In the neighbouring countries, another 207 cases have been declared; 2 in Albania, 4 in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, 34 in Israel, 153 in the Russian Federation, 3 in Tunisia, 3 in Turkey and 8 in Ukraine.

Since the last update at the end of the transmission season, 3 cases of West Nile of neuroinvasive infection have been reported from a new country, Hungary, in three areas, the Hajdú-Bihar, Pest and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties. These cases occurred in September (2 cases) and October (1 case).
In Italy, 1 new case of neuroinvasive infection has been reported from the Udine province, an area with previous case reports. The case occurred in September. Furthermore, the case from Pisa, previously reported as a WN case is now identified as a Toscana virus infection. Thus it has been removed from the table and map.

In EU neighbouring countries, the Russian Federation has reported 17 new human cases of West Nile fever, that occurred up to and including November. Seven cases have been reported from a new area, Krasnodarskiy Kray and the others from oblasts with previous case reports, Rostovskaya (9) and Chelyabinskaya (1).
In Israel, 1 new human case of West Nile fever has been reported from the Northern district, an area with previous case reports. The case occurred in November.
