 Rubella trends, by country

Austria established a national mandatory notification system in 2007.

No operating rubella surveillance in Belgium.

Denmark conducts rubella surveillance based on a mandatory notification system only in cases of pregnancy.

Germany conducts rubella surveillance at regional level

Surveillance of rubella in the Netherlands is based on mandatory reporting of laboratory-confirmed cases.

Turkey established a national mandatory notification system in 2007.

Comments: Comparisons between countries should be made with caution because of dissimilar surveillance sensitivities, completeness of reporting and different reporting procedures—some countries reported only laboratory-confirmed cases whereas others reported clinical cases without laboratory confirmation. Moreover, under-notification is a well recognised limitation of nationwide mandatory notification systems. Any imported cases are included. More information is found in the rubella reports for 2000-2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
