GUIDING AND MEASURING IMPACT OF TB CONTROL IN THE EU/EEA

Framework action plan to
fight tuberculosis in the EU

Progressing towards TB elimination

The Action Plan defines four principles that are key to securing TB prevention and control in the EU/EEA. Cross-cutting these four principles are eight strategic areas aimed at guiding the ECDC as well as Member States in TB control priorities. Core indicators in the follow up monitoring framework are directly linked to the eight areas.

 1. TB control commitment awareness, and capacity of health systems
 2. Surveillance
 3. Laboratory services
 4. Prompt and quality TB care for all
 5. MDR- and XDR TB
 6. TB/HIV co-infection
 7. New tools for TB control
 8. Build partnership and collaboration with countries

GUIDING TB ACTIVITIES

The key focus in the TB programme is linked to the strategic areas of the Action plan and the impact measured with the core indicators of the follow-up of the Action plan.

 1. Tuberculosis prevention and control
 2. Tuberculosis surveillance
 3. Tuberculosis laboratory
 4. New tools for tuberculosis
 5. Tuberculosis in vulnerable populations

About the TB programme

Head of Programme: Marieke van der Werf
Programme Officer: Brigita Molnarova

Background
The Tuberculosis programme was established in 2006 and covers all aspects of tuberculosis (TB) prevention and control. The TB-programme aims to support Member States in TB prevention and control and thus reach the long-term goal of reducing and ultimately eliminating TB in the EU/EEA countries. It intends to create a reference point for EU/EEA countries that provides relevant expertise and information about trends in the epidemiology of TB, about emerging threats related to TB and about scientific advances in the field. Furthermore, the programme aims to ensure appropriate communication channels between, and to all, relevant stakeholders.
To reach these goals, the ECDC TB programme bases its key areas of work and prioritisation on the four principles and eight strategic areas of the Framework action plan to fight TB in the EU. An essential guide to assess and measure the impact of the TB-programme’s efforts, as well as to identify new needs and challenges, on TB prevention and control in the EU/EEA, is the monitoring framework, progressing towards TB elimination: A follow-up to the action plan to fight TB in the EU.
The TB team at ECDC
A multi-disciplinary team implements the TB programme at the ECDC. The team combines expertise in public health, epidemiology, surveillance, microbiology, epidemic intelligence, communication and medicine.
