Key messages

1. HIV infection and AIDS in Europe are characterised by high numbers and diverse epidemics. HIV infection remains of major public health importance in the EU/EEA. In 2010, more than 27 000 newly diagnosed HIV infections were reported across the EU/EEA. Read more

2. Many people in Europe are unaware of their HIV infection. HIV infection can remain asymptomatic for a long period of time, and a high proportion of infected persons are unaware of their affliction. It has been estimated that 30% of individuals infected with HIV in Europe are undiagnosed. Read more

3. HIV testing is essential for prevention, treatment and care. Since the mid 1990s, the benefits of diagnosis and consecutive antiretroviral therapy have been extensively documented. Access to effective therapy has greatly reduced HIV-related morbidity and mortality. Read more
