Communicable diseases threat report, 1-7 July 2012

During the week 1-7, ECDC monitored several EU and non-EU threats.

This month’s ECDC measles monitoring report shows that the number of reported measles cases is much lower in 2012 compared to the same period last year. In addition to measles, ECDC has included rubella in its monthly monitoring report. Both measles and rubella are targeted for elimination in Europe in 2015, and vaccinations are routinely delivered as a trivalent measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Rapid risk assessment: Legionnaires' disease in Calpe, Spain

In February 2012, ECDC issued a rapid risk assessment on the outbreak of travel-associated Legionnaires’ disease that occurred in a hotel in Spain. The risk assessment was updated in May and in June. Following the notification of eight new cases, ECDC further updated its risk assessment on 4 July.

An outbreak of an undiagnosed illness affecting children has been reported by the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Cambodia to World Health Organisation (WHO). Out of the 62 children, 61 have died. No apparent clustering of cases or signs of transmission have been reported so far.

Eurosurveillance was today awarded its first impact factor, a significant 6.15 which now places it amongst the leading field of journals for infectious diseases. ECDC has a long co-operation with Eurosurveillance and welcomes the impact factor which further illustrates the presence that Eurosurveillance has developed in the field of infectious diseases.

On 22 June 2012, a case of locally acquired malaria infection was reported in Greece. The case is a 78 year old Greek citizen who presumably acquired the infection close to Marathon, Attica region.

Communicable disease threat report, 17 - 23 June 2012

On 13 June, Germany reported a fatal case of anthrax in a 51 year old injecting drug user (IDU) in Regensburg. A second patient in the same city was hospitalised on 18 June with fever and swelling at a heroin injection site, following injection three days previously.

Meningitis outbreak in Romania: ECDC assesses risk

An outbreak of aseptic meningitis associated to a kindergarten in Suceava city in northern Romania has been reported. A total of 62 cases of enterovirus have been reported identified in the city and wider district, 53 cases of which have led to aseptic meningitis. Health meeting

In May 2011, the European Commission asked ECDC to estimate the change in total exposure risk to hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) during reproductive cell handling and storage for secondary parties, if the current scheme of testing at each cell donation would change to testing partner donors of reproductive cells once or twice a year.
