Vaccination effectiveness and safety and the public health event of the year are the highlights during the last day of ESCAIDE 2012.
The plenary session ‘Vaccination: Effectiveness, safety and implementation strategies for current and future vaccines’ features presentations about the role of vaccination in public health control and vaccine safety. Prof. Daniel Floret, from Claude Bernard Université Lyon, will present the lessons learned from the measles epidemics in France and Dr. Scott Halperin, from the Canadian Center for Vaccinology, will compare the national vaccination programmes for pertussis. Dr. Piotr Kramarz, ECDC, and Dr. Daniel Weibel, Erasmus University Medical Centre, will examine the post-licensing monitoring of rare adverse events and safety assessment.
The public health event of the year is related to the enhanced surveillance during the London 2012 Olympics and the European football tournament (EURO2012) in Poland, both significant mass gathering events. Pete Kinross, and Justyna Rogalska, EPIET Fellows, will be presenting during this session.
During the last day of the conference, the ESCAIDE attendees will continue to enjoy parallel sessions on various topics as well a session of scientific posters on surveillance, public health microbiology and vaccine-preventable diseases.
The conference will close with a speech of ECDC Director, Marc Sprenger, followed by a graduation ceremony for the EPIET/EUPHEM fellows who joined the programme in 2010.
During the conference ECDC posts information regularly on its Twitter account (@ECDC_EU), including highlights of the sessions, speakers and poster presentations, using the hashtag #ESCAIDE. The presentations will be soon available on www.escaide.eu.
