Abstract
The eighth report launched jointly by ECDC and the WHO Regional Office for Europe indicates that, despite notable progress in the past decade, tuberculosis (TB) is still a public health concern in many countries across Europe. The high rates of TB and multidrug-resistant TB outside the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) are of particular concern, as are the significant number of TB cases among vulnerable populations within the EU/EEA.

In 2014, 58 008 cases of TB were reported in 29 EU/EEA countries. The EU/EEA notification rate was stable at 12.8 per 100 000 population, interrupting a continuous long-term decreasing trend observed since 2002. However, notification rates for both multidrug-resistant and extremely drug-resistant TB showed no sign of decline. The treatment success rate was slightly higher in the EU/EEA countries than in non-EU/EEA countries.
Overall, despite encouraging progress, most targets for monitoring progress towards TB elimination were not achieved in 2014 and particular emphasis should be focused on improving the reporting of HIV status.

The latest figures on tuberculosis are available via ECDC’s Surveillance Atlas of Infectious Diseases, a web-based tool offering access to European infectious disease surveillance data which is searchable by disease, region and period: http://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/data-tools/atlas/Pages/atlas.aspx
