Emerging diseases and outbreak investigations, whole genome sequencing-based surveillance and public health risks related to animal and food imports to the EU/EEA were some of the topics under discussion during the Food- and Waterborne Diseases and Zoonoses Network meeting.

The 7th Food- and Waterborne Diseases and Zoonoses Network (FWD-Net) meeting brought together two representatives of the EU/EEA Member States, representatives of EU enlargement and neighbouring countries, as well as invited speakers from non-EU countries.

In the first session, the meeting focused exclusively on listeriosis in humans and Listeria monocytogenes in the food chain. The second session was on strengthening EU surveillance and microbiology capability and encompass two working group sessions on these topics. There was a plenary interactive session on ECDC’s and Member States’ role in the detection and response to multi-country foodborne outbreaks.

The second day started with discussions on the public health risks related to animal and food imports to the EU/EEA, which was followed by a session on whole genome sequencing-based surveillance of food- and waterborne diseases. The last topic under discussion was emerging diseases and outbreak investigations, which  included presentations on Hepatitis E, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Stanley and Campylobacter.
