Similar to other European countries, cervical infection with HPV-16, the HPV type with the strongest oncogenic potential, were most common both overall and among women with cervical disease.

Providing baseline data for monitoring the impact of HPV vaccination program and development of future cervical cancer screening strategies is essential. The results rendered by this study are extremely useful at national and European level, for monitoring purposes and for health economic and modelling research.
