On the occasion of the 16th European Health Forum Gastein, ECDC is today hosting a lunch workshop with the title “Healthcare-associated infections: time to take responsibility”
The objective of the session is to engage key stakeholders, policy makers, infection control professionals, the patients and the healthcare inspectorate, as well as the audience, in a discussion about how Europe can provide the highest standards of hygiene and infection control in its innovative healthcare systems.
The invited speakers are John F Ryan (DG Health and Consumers, European Commission), Elisabeth Presterl (Clinical Institute of Hospital Hygiene, Medical University of Vienna, Austria), Jan Wijngaarden (Health Care Inspectorate, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, The Netherlands), Laurène Souchet (European Patients’ Forum) and Dominique Monnet (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control).
Following an EU-wide point prevalence survey of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial use in European hospitals, ECDC estimates that on any given day, about 80 000 patients, i.e. one in 18 patients in those hospitals has at least one HAI. Overall, this amounts to an estimated total of 3.2 million patients (95% confidence interval: from 1.9 to 5.2 million) with a HAI in European hospitals each year.
Marc Sprenger, ECDC Director, says: “Protecting hospital patients from healthcare-associated infections is a joint task. Policy makers, hospital managers and authorities at EU and national level, as well as patients themselves, need to cooperate in this shared responsibility”.
