Epidemiological update: Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), 4 July 2013
Since the last ECDC update on 17 June 2013, 13 new confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and two deaths have been reported by the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia.
Swine influenza A(H1N1) in the US and Mexico – Update
In its most recent communication on 25April, the United States CDC in Atlanta confirmed eight cases of an infection with a novel swine influenza A(H1N1) virus in two US states (California and Texas). These cases have presented with mild flu-like symptoms between the end of March and mid-April and all have fully recovered.
Dengue Fever: Short epidemiological update, Brazil, Bahia state – 20 August 2009
In 2009, the tourist state of Bahia, Brazil, has been severely affected by dengue fever. As of 8th August 2009, the local health authorities reported more than 100,000 cases of dengue fever, representing an increase of 199% compared to the same period in 2008.
Measles: Short epidemiological update, Wales, the United Kingdom – 21 August 2009
Wales is currently facing an outbreak of measles. As of 20 August, 20 out of 22 counties of Wales are affected and the National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS) reported 379 cases in total since the beginning of the year (268 cases in Mid and West Wales, 61 in North Wales and 50 in South East Wales).
Dengue Fever: Short epidemiological update, Americas – 8 July 2009
From January 1st to June 26th 2009, a total of 480,909 cases of dengue have been reported in the Americas, including 7,547 cases of severe dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever, dengue shock syndrome, and complicated dengue) and 186 deaths.
Chikungunya : Short epidemiological update, South-East Asia – 15 July 2009
Here we present an update of the Chikungunya situation in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore the 3 countries for which information is publicly available. Some popular touristic areas currently report Chikungunya transmission. Therefore it is recommended that persons who develop symptoms after coming back from such areas consult their general practitioner, mentioning their travels.
Chikungunya: Chikungunya Fever in South-East Asia - 10 Jun 2009
In recent years, countries in South-East Asia have been severely affected by outbreaks of Chikungunya fever. India was hit in 2006 after a quiescence of 32 years, following the re-emergence in Kenya in 2004 and the spread in the Indian Ocean islands in 2005. Indonesia, Maldives, and Sri Lanka have also been affected by Chikungunya. In 2008, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia reported outbreaks.
Epidemiological update: Polio virus in sewage and human faecal samples in Israel, August 2013
In May 2013, Israel announced the detection of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in the south of the country (1). As reported until mid-August, during the routine monitoring of sewage samples the virus had been found in 67 sewage samples from 24 sampling sites since February 2013.

On 14 August 2013 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected in poultry in Ostellato, Ferrara province, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Influenza subtype A(H7N7) was confirmed.
