Every year, around 50 000 newly diagnosed cases of hepatitis B and C are reported across Europe but millions are unaware of their infection. Left untreated, hepatitis can cause irreversible liver damage. Hepatitis A is recognised as a re-emerging health threat in Europe.

Taking stock: where does Europe stand in the elimination of hepatitis B and C?
In 2016, a regional action plan for Europe that aims to contribute to the implementation of the global viral hepatitis elimination strategy was developed by the WHO Regional Office for Europe. In an article published today in Eurosurveillance, the authors take a closer look how Europe is doing according to the ten indicators and targets outlined in this plan. In short: Europe still has some way to go if it wants to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

WHO: Action plan for the health sector response to viral hepatitis in the WHO European Region
This first Action plan for viral hepatitis in the WHO European Region adapts the Global health sector strategy on viral hepatitis, 2016–2021 to the context of the European Region. The goal of the Action plan is elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat in the WHO European Region by 2030 through the reduction of transmission, morbidity and mortality due to viral hepatitis and its complications, and by ensuring equitable access to comprehensive prevention, recommended testing, care and treatment services for all.
