On 13 November 2012, the Health Protection Agency published the whole genome sequence data from the second case of respiratory disease associated with a novel coronavirus who was hospitalised in England. The virus genome is highly similar to that of the virus identified by Rotterdam investigators in the first case hospitalised in Saudi Arabia. Comparison of the viral sequences showed that the closest known relatives are coronaviruses previously detected in bats. These findings are consistent with a possible zoonotic source of infection.
