The HIV epidemic in the countries of the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) persists largely unchanged with annually around 30 000 newly reported diagnoses.
One reason for this persistent HIV epidemic: ECDC estimates that currently more than 122 000 people living with HIV across the region are unaware of their infection.
The average time between HIV infection and diagnosis, while improving, is still nearly four years.
Finding the gap
An estimated 15% of people who are living with HIV in the EU/EEA do not know their HIV status because they have not yet been diagnosed. To close this gap between those who are unaware of their infection and those diagnosed, we need to encourage and enable more testing for HIV. The ECDC HIV modelling tool helps countries to figure out where they have to focus their testing efforts in order to reach the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets.
