Countering online vaccine misinformation in the EU/EEA – a case study project

Ref.: NP/2020/DPR/11912 | Media type: ex-ante publicity
Deadline:

Based on the the Council Recommendation of 7 December 2018 on
strengthened cooperation against vaccine-preventable diseases, ECDC has been directed to
“counter online vaccine misinformation and develop evidence-based information tools and
guidance to support Member States in responding to vaccine hesitancy.“ This is the
background for the present contract, which has as its objectives (i) to map the sources of
online vaccine misinformation within the EU/EEA, and (ii) to identify good practices from
across the EU/EEA in addressing this misinformation. Case studies will be conducted in six
EU/EEA countries to answer these objectives, based on documentary review (both peerreviewed
and grey), online sources, and qualitative phone/skype interviews with identified
experts in the selected Member States. The ultimate aim is to identify a set of transferable
lessons learned that will – under a future contract – be developed into a training package and
guidance for EU/EEA Member States.
