Key elements of ECDC's reinforced mandate: editorial in Eurosurveillance

News

In a recent editorial published in 𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, Andrea Ammon and Maarit Kokki provide an overview of the changes in the ECDC mandate.

Our reinforced mandate, they mention, further strengthens the capacity of ECDC to provide the robust and independent scientific expertise necessary to support actions related to the prevention, preparedness, and response planning to prevent and control serious cross border threats to health, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2022/2371 on the same topic.

Their editorial, 'Preparing Europe for future health threats and crises – key elements of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s reinforced mandate', is part of a series of Eurosurveillance editorials by the Directors of ECDC, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority HERA, where the authors outline key features of the (strengthened) mandates and future preparedness activities of their organisations. Both ECDC and EMA also provide examples how these will complement the work of the other ‘sister’ agencies and HERA.

The series on the European Health Union will be completed with an editorial from the European Commission Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) and is complemented by an editorial on the WHO hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin, published in 2022.
