In 2022, there were no reported cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in the EU/EEA. In total, 28 EU/EEA countries reported data on vCJD in 2022. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease remains extremely rare. This is consistent with the current understanding of the underlying epidemiology of vCJD, and the positive impact of risk mitigation measures introduced in the EU from the late 1980s to remove potentially infectious animal material from the food chain, to prevent infections in humans.
