Substandard education, low income, or other socio-economic factors result in the inequitable distribution of communicable diseases. Disadvantaged groups are especially vulnerable and risk greater exposure to disease because of environmental or behavioural risk factors. A workshop was convened to discuss new ideas to ameliorate the discrepancies between these groups.

On 24 July 2012, the Ministry of Health of Uganda reported an outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever from Kibaale district, Midwestern Uganda. As of 7 August 2012, 60 suspected cases, including 16 deaths, have been reported in Uganda.
