As of 3 March 2016, autochthonous cases of Zika virus infection have been reported from 38 countries and territories worldwide in the past two months. Forty-one countries and territories have reported autochthonous cases of Zika virus infection in the past nine months.
Since last week, WHO AFRO reported that sequencing of the Zika virus in Cape Verde by Institut Pasteur in Dakar confirmed that the virus currently circulating in Cape Verde is the same as the one circulating in the Americas - the Asian type- and was most likely imported from Brazil. This is the first time that the Asian Zika strain has been detected in Africa.
On 28 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a press release stating that cancelling or changing the location of the 2016 Olympics would not significantly alter the international spread of Zika virus.
