This ECDC surveillance report on STI in Europe describes the epidemiological features and basic trends of the five STI under EU surveillance, Chlamydia trachomatis infection, gonorrhoea, syphilis, congenital syphilis, and lymphogranuloma venereum.
Every year, around 50 000 newly diagnosed cases of hepatitis B and C are reported across Europe but millions are unaware of their infection. Left untreated, hepatitis can cause irreversible liver damage. Hepatitis A is recognised as a re-emerging health threat in Europe.
These slogans are part a toolkit which aims to support infection prevention in schools, with a focus on gastrointestinal diseases, by assisting EU/EEA countries in their communication initiatives for disease prevention in school settings.
This guidance, based on a systematic review of the literature and expert opinion, suggests that there is good evidence to ensure that some key components are considered for inclusion in national and sub-national public health programmes in countries in Europe.
At the request of the Ministry of Health in Riga, a team of experts from ECDC and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction paid a technical visit to Latvia on 2–4 September 2014.
