This report is based on data for 2018-2020 retrieved on 13 February 2023 from The European Surveillance System (TESSy) and ECDC’s decentralised data storage for antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections (ARHAI). TESSy is a system for the collection, analysis and dissemination of data on communicable diseases.
Increased numbers of shigellosis cases, mainly caused by Shigella sonnei, among travellers returning from Cabo Verde, have been reported in the EU/EEA, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) since September 2022.
An increased reporting of shigellosis cases, mainly caused by Shigella sonnei, among travellers returning from Cabo Verde has been ongoing in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA), the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (US) since September 2022. This outbreak evolved rapidly during November and December 2022.

Shigellosis is a relatively uncommon disease in the EU/EEA, but remains of concern in some countries and for some population groups. For 2020, 29 EU/EEA countries reported 1 806 confirmed shigellosis cases.
Anthrax continues to be a rare disease in humans in Europe, with only a few cases reported every year. For 2017, two European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries reported six confirmed anthrax cases (Romania reported five cases and Bulgaria one). The remaining 28 reporting countries did not notify any confirmed cases.
