This presentation is based on a report prepared jointly with the WHO Regional Office for Europe, which presents data on HIV and AIDS for the whole European Region, including the EU and EEA countries.
This report describes a country mission undertaken by ECDC in 2011 to Latvia, to address issues relating to HIV, STI and hepatitis B and C identified by the Latvian government.
According to new data published today by ECDC and the WHO Regional Office for Europe, more than 131 000 new HIV infections were reported in the WHO European Region in 2012, 10 000 (8%) more than in 2011. Of these new HIV infections, the countries of the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) accounted for more than 29 000 new HIV infections.
This joint meeting of the networks on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and HIV offered a platform for expert discussion among nominated ECDC contact points for STI and HIV on 8-9 March. On 10-11 March 2016, the European network for HIV/AIDS Surveillance brought together the nominated HIV/AIDS surveillance contact and focal points of the 53 countries of the WHO European Region.
Despite efforts to prevent new HIV infections, more than 27 000 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) in 2010.
Since the onset of Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine on 24 February 2022, and as of 11 April 2022, more than 4 million Ukrainian people have fled to Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
