Since last week’s update, and as of 2 August 2023, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 36 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and 3 deaths related to WNV infections. Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 2 August 2023, 2 outbreaks among equids and 19 outbreaks among birds have been reported by EU/EEA countries. Outbreaks among equids have been reported by Spain (2). Outbreaks among birds have been reported by Italy (16) and Germany (3).
Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 2 August 2023, EU/EEA countries have reported 41 human cases of WNV infection in Italy (26), Greece (11), France (3) and Hungary (1). EU/EEA countries have reported 3 deaths in Greece (2) and Italy (1). EU-neighbouring countries did not report any human cases of WNV infection.
Since the previous update on 7 June 2023, and as of 4 July 2023, no new MERS-CoV cases and related deaths have been reported by health authorities worldwide or the World Health Organization (WHO).
