In 2019, 29 countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) reported a total of 49 752 tuberculosis (TB) cases (9.6 per 100 000 population).
This is the third report for the 2020–2021 influenza season. As of week 53/2020, only 415 influenza detections across the WHO European Region had been reported; 50% type A viruses, with A(H3N2) prevailing over A(H1N1)pdm09, and 50% type B viruses with only four having been ascribed to a lineage, three B/Victoria and one B/Yamagata. This represents a 98% drop in detections compared to the same period in 2019, probably due to the COVID-19 pandemic and measures introduced to combat it.
One of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals is to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Still, 2 094 AIDS cases were reported in the EU/EEA during 2019. This shows a significant problem with late diagnosis of HIV infection. Detecting HIV only years after the infection is one reason for on-going transmission in Europe. One in every four AIDS cases occurred long after HIV diagnosis, indicating insufficient linkage to HIV care, access to antiretroviral treatment and adherence support.
This is the second report for the 2020–2021 influenza season. As of week 48/2020, only 288 influenza detections across the WHO European Region had been reported to TESSy; 52% type A viruses, with A(H3N2) prevailing over A(H1N1)pdm09, and 48% type B viruses with only two having been ascribed to a lineage, both being B/Victoria. This represents a 96% drop in detections compared to the same period in 2019, probably due to the COVID-19 pandemic and measures introduced to combat it.
Urgent action is required to improve efforts to prevent hepatitis B and C infections in the EU/EEA and the UK if the region is to meet the 2020 targets for the elimination of viral hepatitis as a serious threat to public health. Significant gaps in the reported data in relation to prevalence and prevention of HBV and HCV in EU/EEA and the UK present a major challenge to monitoring progress towards the targets for elimination of hepatitis.
For 2020, 26 EU/EEA countries reported 1 957 cases of dengue, of which 1 820 (93%) were confirmed. From 2016 to 2020, no obvious trend in the number of cases could be identified.
This report provides an overview of the latest tuberculosis (TB) epidemiological situation and is published jointly by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and ECDC.
A total of 13 200 measles cases were reported by the EU/EEA countries and the UK in 2019. In addition, approximately 1 000 measles cases were reported in the first two months of 2020. Cases were reported in all age groups. This highlights the importance of continuous efforts to improve routine childhood immunisation programmes and address immunity gaps in the population.
This ECDC Digital Roadmap describes how digital transformation will support the implementation of the ECDC Strategy 2021−2027. It sets out ECDC’s digital vision and the main areas of activity involved in its implementation.
