The European Antibiotic Awareness Day is an annual European public health initiative that takes place on 18 November to raise awareness about the threat to public health of antibiotic resistance and the importance of prudent antibiotic use. Prudent use of antibiotics can help stop resistant bacteria from developing and help keep antibiotics effective for the use of future generations.

The European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2015 focuses on self-medication with antibiotics, a toolkit with template campaign materials on the EAAD website can be adapted for use in the country campaigns, to raise awareness on the issue. To support country campaigns and promote prudent antibiotic use, ECDC has produced  in 2015 translated versions of the animation ‘How much do Europeans know about prudent use of antibiotics’ and a new EAAD infographic on the spread of antibiotic resistance. The newly translated materials are available in all in all EU/EEA languages.

On 16 November, a launch event in Brussels with the participation of stakeholders, will highlight the latest data, actions and awareness campaigns related to antibiotic resistance.

As in previous years, on 18 November ECDC will release the latest data and findings on AMR in Europe. On the same day two social media events will take place: a  24-hour Global Twitter conversation on 18 November #AntibioticResistance and a European Twitter chat on 18 November (13:00-14:00 CET) with: #EAAD. (add later a link to the news item)

This year, EAAD is partnering with World Antibiotic Awareness Week: the first World Antibiotic Awareness Week is organised for the first year in 2015 by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Its theme is “Antibiotics: Handle with Care” and takes place the week of 16 November.
