Following the risk-ranking exercise implemented through three consultative meetings in 2022, the Africa CDC headquarters and its Eastern Africa Regional Coordination Centre (EA-RCC) organised in collaboration with ECDC a risk-ranking exercise on infectious pathogens. This also supported Africa CDC’s workforce capacity building for emergency preparedness planning and resource allocation.

The workshop brought together 45 participants, including representatives from 14 African Union Member States, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO), and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). The aim was to agree on a list of prioritised epidemic diseases for preparedness planning, and to increase knowledge on the risk-ranking methodology.  The workshop arranged practical activities to apply the risk-ranking methodology, as well as adjust and pilot the risk-ranking tool to rank selected priority pathogens in East Africa.

This was the first in a series of workshops planned regionally to better reflect local contexts and priorities. It and follows from the publication of the Africa CDC’s first Risk-Ranking and Prioritisation of Epidemic-prone Diseases document, on 26 February 2023. This was the result of a synergetic collaboration between project counterparts in the Africa CDC and ECDC.
