Spring European Testing Week 2020
In order to maximise the benefits of treatment for HIV or viral hepatitis, it is critical to test and diagnose people as soon as possible in the course of the infection. The European Testing week is a European campaign that encourages partner organisations throughout Europe to unite for one week twice a year to increase testing efforts and promote awareness on the benefits of earlier hepatitis and HIV testing.
ECDC publishes first report monitoring progress towards the elimination of hepatitis B and C in the EU/EEA
This year the European Testing week (ETW) coincides with the release of the ECDC report on the first collation of data relating to the monitoring of the progress towards the elimination of hepatitis B and C for EU/EEA countries.
A key finding of the report is that available data indicate a high proportion of people living with hepatitis B and C infections are undiagnosed. This indicates that concerted efforts are needed to scale up testing for hepatitis B and C, especially among people who inject drugs and people in prison, if countries in the EU/EEA are to have any chance of reaching the 2030 targets on diagnosis, treatment and viral suppression.

About the campaign
ETW is a European campaign that encourages partner organisations, in community, health care and policy institutions, throughout Europe to unite for one week twice a year to increase testing efforts and promote awareness on the benefits of earlier hepatitis and HIV testing.
The initiative is a widely recognised European event with hundreds of organisations participating every year. What once started as an annual event has now become a biannual event with two ETWs occurring each year in Spring (May) and Autumn (November).
Now in its eighth year, the European Testing Week initiative will hold its third Spring European Testing Week from 15-22 May 2020.
