ECDC Summer School 2012Archived
The ECDC Summer School (Train the trainer on applied epidemiology and public health microbiology), aims at strengthening mentoring and technical skills of EPIET and EUPHEM supervisors, while providing an opportunity for networking and scientific exchange on methods for prevention and control of communicable diseases, among supervisors and with ECDC experts.
Objectives
1. Bring supervisors of fellowships (EPIET & EUPHEM) together to share and exchange experiences and views on supervision, coaching and creating collaborations between microbiologists and epidemiologists
2. To bring ECDC core activities and the fellowship network closer together (increasing ability for supervisors to identify projects that link to ECDC core and priority tasks, increasing opportunities for ECDC experts to be aware of and be involved in fellowship projects)
3. To address expressed training needs among the supervisors
Target audience
The target audience was the supervisors of EPIET and EUPHEM: main supervisors, co-supervisors and also those that support fellows in specific projects. They are mid-career and senior professionals in applied epidemiology and public health microbiology.
Learning objectives & contents
Learning objectives and curriculum of the different sessions and activities were based on the ECDC core competencies for Public Health Epidemiologists and Public Health Microbiologist working in the areas of communicable disease surveillance and response in the EU. They can be grouped in the following areas:
- Supervision/mentoring on the job
- Applied epidemiology (risk assessment, laboratory issues, outbreak investigation, epidemiological studies, public health surveillance)
- Public health microbiology (risk assessment, outbreak investigation, public health surveillance)
- Communication
- Management
- Training (Didactics)
Methods
Participative methods was used including: peer learning, problem-based solving, role play, group discussions, portfolio, case studies, etc.
The duration of each workshop was one day. Workshops ran in parallel and were lead by EPIET Coordinators and other ECDC experts from different Units.

We are pleased to inform you that the ECDC Summer school-2012 was accredited by EACCME and assigned 30 European CME Credits (ECMEC) by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME).
