The ECDC Communicable Disease Threats Report (CDTR) is a weekly bulletin for epidemiologists and health professionals on active public health threats. This issue of the CDTR covers the period 5-11 October 2024 and includes updates on measles, mpox, avian influenza, West Nile virus, dengue, Marburg virus disease, a new strain of multidrug-resistant Shigella Sonnei ST152, and an overview of respiratory virus epidemiology in the EU/EEA.

Marburg virus disease

Marburg virus disease, formerly known as Marburg haemorrhagic fever, is a severe disease in humans. Although the disease is uncommon, it has the potential to cause epidemics with significant case fatality rates.

Mpox

The mpox (monkeypox) virus is transmitted to humans through a bite or direct contact with an infected animal’s blood, body fluids or cutaneous/mucosal lesions.

Dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease widely spread in tropical and subtropical regions. It is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Most of the clinical cases present a febrile illness, severe forms include hemorrhagic fevers and shock with fatalities.
