Developing a reporting system for the surveillance of HIV drug resistance in Europe
A pilot project was carried out to investigate the feasibility of HIVDR surveillance in EU/EEA countries and to make recommendations for the design and implementation of a potential future HIVDR surveillance system at the European level.
Executive summary
One of the priorities identified in ECDC’s molecular surveillance roadmap is to focus on the molecular characterisation of HIV, starting with HIVDR - HIV drug resistance.
The objectives of HIVDR surveillance are to monitor the prevalence of, and trends in, HIV drug resistance in newly diagnosed HIV patients at initiation of antiretroviral treatment in order to inform treatment policies in the EU/EEA Member States.
ECDC intends to develop a sustainable HIVDR surveillance system that complements the overall structure of European HIV surveillance.
