This study found a marked reduction in vaccine serotype carriage after PCV7 implementation. The overall pneumococcal, H. influenzae and S. aureus carriage decreased slightly, but not significantly. Recently available pneumococcal conjugate vaccines with broader serotype coverage may lead to reduced overall pneumococcal carriage; the impact on the carriage of other nasopharingeal pathogens requires on-going monitoring.
