EPIET Sampling ModuleArchived

Event
25 Jun 2012 - 29 Jun 2012
Paris
ECDC in collaboration with Epicentre

The module was jointly organized by ECDC and EAP with the collaboration of Epicentre (one of the EPIET training hosting site). Topics covered by the module were: basic concepts of sampling, major sampling designs with both practical and theoretical approach (how to take a sample; formulas for estimation of population characteristics). A case study allowed analyzing survey data taking into account the sampling design

Objectives

  • Discuss the general principles of sampling:
    • Understand the concepts of population, sample,  parameters, estimates;
    • Describe the methodologies used for selecting the sample from the population;
    • Discuss their advantages and limitations;
    • Specify algorithms and formulas used for obtaining estimates of the population parameters from the sample data and for estimating the reliability of these population estimates.
  • Implement sampling design:
    • Choose the most appropriate sampling design according to the study question and the available information;
    • Determine the sample size needed for reliable estimates, according to the sampling design;
    • Use appropriate methods and/or software to take random samples according to the sampling design;
    • Compute estimated population parameters and their variance according to the sampling design.

Pedagogical methods:

The methods used during the module will be a combination of interactive lectures and practical case studies using Stata and Excel.
